Attorney John Page Discusses Missouri Motorcycle Injury Accidents
Two motorcyclists were injured last week on Missouri’s roads, according to NeoshoDailyNews.com.
In one of the Missouri motorcycle accidents, one of the motorcyclists didn’t properly negotiate a curve, causing him to lose control and overturn. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The other motorcyclist crashed while attempting to pass another vehicle. While trying to pass, he left the road and hit a ditch. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and suffered moderate injuries.
Ironically, these accidents happened at a time when Missouri’s motorcycle helmet law is under attack. A new law is set for debate that would allow any motorcyclists over the age of 21 to not wear a helmet. Proponents of the law claim that helmets aren’t safe. They say that helmets affect the way motorcyclists hear and see. In addition, they claim that helmets can cause riders to pass out from heat exhaustion. They argue that training programs that teach specific techniques, such as defensive riding, are better at preventing motorcycle injuries or deaths than mandatory helmet laws. Supporters of the law argue that without helmets, riders are less safe, and medical costs are increased.
Helmets save lives and help prevent motorcyclists from suffering serious injuries or injuries that could lead to death. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle fatalities fell 16 percent in 2009, from an all-time high in 2008 of 5,312. The Missouri Department of Transportation reports that motorcycle fatalities decreased 21 percent in the same time period.
There’s no question that accidents can be much more serious for motorcyclists than those in passenger vehicles.
